All Shelby County Schools will resume normal operations on Thursday, January 18. We are excited to welcome our students and staff back!

Shelby County Schools will remain closed on Wednesday, January 17 due to winter weather conditions, including the forecast of a hard freeze overnight. There are still areas of the county experiencing icy road conditions that are not likely to improve until temperatures rise above freezing midday on Wednesday. We anticipate being back to a normal school schedule on Thursday.

Due to the threat of winter weather and extreme temperatures, all Shelby County Schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 16, and students will transition to remote learning. All after-school activities are also canceled. We are also monitoring the weather for Wednesday morning and will announce school delays or closures as we receive more detailed weather information.

Due to the threat of severe weather, specifically straight-line winds causing downed trees and powerlines on Friday, January 12, all Shelby County Schools will be closed and students will transition to remote learning. All after-school activities are also canceled. Schools will be closed on Monday, January 15 for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. We are also monitoring the weather for Tuesday morning and will announce school delays or closures as we receive more detailed weather information.

Our seniors enjoyed hearing Dale Alexander talk about money today.

Author Dale Alexander, best known for his insightful book "The Talk (about money)” is visiting Shelby County high schools in January to share insights with students eager to learn about financial literacy and responsible money management. Alexander, a seasoned expert in personal finance, has dedicated his career to empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary for financial success. His latest book, "The Talk (about money)," has gained widespread acclaim for its practical advice and easy-to-understand insights into the world of finance. Alexander is the president of Alexander & Company, which partners with Shelby County Schools to provide supplementary benefits to employees. The book has been featured in numerous national media outlets and was gifted by the Georgia State Board of Education to all 120,000 graduating seniors in Georgia schools this past year. Alexander is set to speak to students from Montevallo High, Shelby County High, and Vincent High on January 9 from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. at the Grande Hall at Shelby County Arts Council. A free community event will also be on January 9 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the same location. Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of the book. Alexander will travel to Oak Mountain High and Chelsea High on January 10, followed by Calera High and Helena High on January 11. The speaking engagements will provide students with a unique opportunity to engage directly with Alexander. The author will share anecdotes from his journey, discuss key concepts from his book, and offer valuable tips on budgeting, saving, and making informed financial decisions.

Duck Race 2023! Helena High band students monitored the race and helped collect the ducks! It's a big annual fundraiser for them. We also hear a rumor that the big duck on the boat is a good friend to the High School!

We received the High School Attendance Award for the months of August and September. Let's keep up the good work!

In recognition of Attendance Awareness Month, Helena High School is implementing a perfect attendance incentive for the entire school year. In order to receive this incentive students must meet the following criteria to maintain perfect attendance for the current grading period: no tardies to class; no skipping, including LEAD; no unexcused absences. In order for an absence to be excused, a doctor's note or parent note must be submitted within 3 days. The incentive for perfect attendance is a silver grade replacement.
